In deze op Tennessee Williams's toneelstuk gebaseerde film trouwen Myrtle (Lynn Redgrave) en Jeb (James Coburn) in een televisieshow nadat ze elkaar pas net hebben ontmoet. Ze trekken samen in het ouderlijk huis van Jeb, dat ook door Jeb's halfbroer Chicken (Robert Hooks) wordt bewoond. Door middel van flashbacks wordt er steeds meer duidelijk over het verleden van de drie hoofdpersonen.
